Framed photograph of the Villa Borghese by Bill Henson, from the Rome series. “The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious”  Bill Henson.

In the early 2000s Melbourne photographic artist Bill Henson travelled to Italy where he captured various moments culminating in ‘The Rome Series’  Exhibitions of 2006 at Tolarno Gallery in St Kilda, Melbourne, Rosslyn Oxley Sydney, Secrist Chicago and Robert Miller New York.

Inspiration Twilight at the Villa Borghese Rome

Medium Photographic image, original black 20cm profile timber frame, art glass.

In the true essence of Bill Henson, this large image depicts the pathway beside Rome’s Villa Borghese, the shadowy architectural decay dimming in the final moments between dusk and dark, that quintessential ‘twilight’ mood that makes a Bill Henson work instantly recognisable. Henson asks the viewer to fill in the missing parts, that which you cannot see, with your minds eye. There is no defined line between the known and the unknown, the viewed and the imagined.
