Utrecht chair by Gerrit Thomas Rietveld for Cassina
The iconic Utrecht Armchair by Dutch architect Gerrit Thomas Rietveld (1888-1964) for Cassina Italy. SOLD
Designed in 1935 the Utrecht armchair is a 20th Century design icon symbolising the interwar idealistic movement in the Netherlands known as De Stijl (or Neoplasticism) based on ideas of rationalism, utopia and abstraction, all precursors to modernism. Utrecht is characterised by a backrest and seat touching the ground and armrests that double as supports.
Fabrication Steel inner frame, birch plywood form, polyurethane foam, grosgrain black fabric with contrasting cucitura punto cavallo stitching, in natural.
