CL9 ribbon chairs for Bernini

Description

Pair of rare CL9 ribbon chairs by Cesare Leonardi and Franca Stagi for Bernini Italy. SOLD

Designed / launched by whom/when:Italian architects Cesare Leonardi and Franca Stagi created the CL9 ribbon chair in 1961. The Design duo’s ‘atelier’ became a supplier of unique and interesting interior objects during the 60s & 70s, and included the ‘dondola’ a fibreglass rocking chair now on permanent exhibit at MOMA New York.

Inspiration:The use of fibreglass as a furniture material was economically viable in Italy during the 1960s. It was appreciated by Leonardi and Stagi for being corrosive-proof, of high strength and excellent in appearance. Production of these chairs became economically unviable following the 1973 oil crisis.

Fabrication:A singular ‘ribbon’ of fibreglass with a high  gloss paint finish, cantilevered on a triangular, chromed tubular steel base.

Hidden Features:The cantilever provides a subtle springiness.

Design Consigned Stylist:Poolside ‘Palm Springs’ perfection or inside, these chairs blur the line between art and design.

Design Consigned Collector:Authentic 1970s originals made in Modena Italy. In very good condition with 3-4 small detracting faults. SOLD
