Designed / launched by whom/when: Eero Saarinen (1910-1961) was a Finnish born American Industrial Designer who studied Sculpture and Furniture Design at the Academy of Art in Michigan where he befriended Charles Eames and Florence Knoll (then Schust) The Tulip series was created in 1958, for his friend’s furniture brand, Knoll.
Inspiration: A flared ‘stem’ is enough for support, declared Saarinen who wanted to reduce the visual noise and clutter under tables and chairs.
Fabrication: Solid cast aluminium base with gloss resin finish. Signature Calacatta grey white marble top with under bevel.
Hidden Features: Includes the set of 4 vintage Tulip chairs with original fabric with fading but no faults.
Design Consigned Stylist: Curvilinear and organic forms, instantly recognisable 1950s Design. This tulip setting in calacatta marble is for those after that true vintage aesthetic.
DC Collector: Knoll Inc was founded in New York City in 1938 by Hans Knoll. His wife Florence later expanded the company on to International production. This table was made in Italy at the Knoll factory in Foligno.
Verification: Base wears Alcoa embossing, the aluminium component manufacturer for Knoll. One original owner. Some faint white round etch rings to top visible only in bright daylight. Refinishing quote $850
