CL9 ribbon chairs

CL9 ribbon chairs x 2

Pair of rare CL9 ribbon chairs by Cesare Leonardi and Franca Stagi. Inside or out, these vintage cantilevered chairs will attract comment.

Designed / launched by whom/when: Italian architects Cesare Leonardi and Franca Stagi created the CL9 ribbon chair in 1961. Their atelier was a supplier of unique and interesting interior objects during the 60s & 70s, and included the ‘dondola’ a fibreglass rocking chair now on permanent exhibit at MOMA New York.

Inspiration: The use of fibreglass as a furniture material was economically viable in Italy during the 1960s. It was appreciated by Leonardi and Stagi for being corrosive-proof, of high strength and excellent in appearance. Production of these chairs became economically unviable following the 1973 oil crisis.

Fabrication: A singular ‘ribbon’ of fibreglass with a high  gloss paint finish, cantilevered on a triangular, chromed tubular steel base.

Hidden Features: The cantilever provides a subtle springiness.

Design Consigned Stylist: Poolside ‘Palm Springs’ perfection or inside, these chairs blur the line between art and design.

Design Consigned Collector: Authentic 1970s originals made in Modena Italy. We noted a pair sold at 3000 euros at auction in 2007. In very good condition.

Priced and for sale as a pair.
