Thonet S43 dining chair by Mart Stam
Six S43 cantilevered dining chairs in black with chrome frame by Mart Stam for Gebruder Thonet Germany.
Designed / launched by whom/when: Designed in 1931 for Gebruder Thonet Germany, the S43 is a true Bauhaus Design by Dutch Architect, Mart Stam (b1899-1986).
Inspiration: A “new objectivity’ focussing foremost on lightness, durability and comfort.
Fabrication: Black stained, steam-bent European beechwood, chrome plated tubular steel cantilever frame, black rivets.
Hidden Features: Due to the flex of the cantilevered frame, the chair has a surprising comfort, rendering upholstery frivolous and unnecessary.
Design Consigned Stylist: Superb example of early Bauhaus minimalism and simplicity of the cantilever chair. This ‘Melbourne black’ version we love.
DC Collector: Authentic originals, made, under exclusive artistic copyright since 1931, by Thonet. The S43 is an exemplary example of restrained Bauhaus Design and the arrival of the cantilever chair.
DC Insider: When a trained joiner turned leftist reformer experiments with disused gas pipes, a new style of chair is born. Stam was awarded copyright for his chair, which Thonet retains exclusively today.
Stamp or Mark of authenticity: base stamped. These are several years old but in immaculate condition and look almost as new.
