Edward Wormley 5407 Party sofa
Pair of matching three seater Edward Wormley style 5407 ‘party’ sofas, upholstered in a glamorous ‘slubbed’ aquamarine fabric. Available individually.
The traditional Chesterfield sofa is an English ‘aristocratic’ design of the 1800s. It’s signature features are rolled arms, buttoned upholstery and matching back and arm height. This sofa is an American modernist take on the original style.
Design by: Edward Wormley (1907-1995), an American modernist furniture Designer based in California. He designed the ‘party’ sofa for Furniture makers, Dunbar USA, in 1954.
Inspiration: A modernist interpretation of the traditional Chesterfield sofa with a ‘flattened’ rather than ‘rolled’ backrest and arms. Edward Wormley took classic design elements and translated them into a modern vernacular.
Fabrication: Solid timber frame, aquamarine slub fabric with self-button tufting. Custom made in Melbourne 2015.
DC Insider: Both in same / excellent structural condition with firm seat and absolutely no lumpiness or sagging, 2-3 marks to one and slight sun fade to side and backs which does not detract, but rather enhances the vintage appeal. DC Stylist: Comfortably seat 6 for glamorous pre dinner drinks on these matching sofas. Originally fashionable in the grand estates of England in the 1800s, these days a ‘tufted’ sofa makes a ‘luxe bohemian’ style statement, as seen in the Parisian boutique of Belgian Fashion Designer Dries van Noten who also has this sofa in his Tokyo boutique.
