Original Memphis Armchair pair

Original Memphis armchair pair designed by Adam Tihany and made by i4 Mariani Italy c1980. The frame is solid wood entirely upholstered in Italian leather.

‘Ferrari’ red with black trim. The high quality of the leather and stitch detailing is evident. Condition is very good with no faults to the upholstery.

The daring and unusual designs of the ‘Memphis’ movement are sought after by design collectors. The style was created in Milan by a group of student architects at the Milan Polytechnic. Characterised by a core sensibility of mischief, hectic flair, haphazard order, stripes, diagonals and solid primary colors defined with black trim. Adam Tihany studied at the Milan Polytechnic at the time and apprenticed at a number of Milanese design firms during the 1970s before returning home to set up his own design studio and becoming one of New Yorks top hospitality designers.
