Moooi smoke Armchair by Maarten Baas
A traditional style chair reimagined by young ‘maverick designer’ Maarten Baas who is not afraid to break design rules
Designed in 2002 by Maarten Baas, a graduate of the Netherlands Eindhoven Design School. Baas torched then coated furniture to achieve useable pieces with a unique ‘charred’ look. The ‘smoke’ collection was born.

Inspriation: ‘subversive’ furniture
Fabrication: Charred timber with a clear epoxy resin sealant. Smooth leather upholstery with fire retardant high density padding designed to maintain the original shape.
Hidden Features: Due to the manufacturing process, all ‘smoke’ pieces are unique.
Design Consigned Stylist: Famous accent chair in always cool ‘Melbourne black’ . Great look for the modern farmhouse too. Place next to a fireplace to amuse your guests.
Design Consigned Collector: Baas held a solo exhibition of his ‘smoke’ collection at Moss Gallery in New York in 2004. Smoke is now considered as a significant modern collection and can be seen at many museums including the Victoria & Albert and the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. This piece is over five years old but in excellent condition and looked new to us. Wears moooi plaque.
