CL9 ribbon chairs

CL9 ribbon chairs x 2

Matching pair of CL9 ribbon chairs by Cesare Leonardi and Franca Stagi.

Designed / launched by whom/when: Italian architects Cesare Leonardi and Franca Stagi released the CL9 ribbon chair in 1961. Designed at their studio in Modena, a supplier of unique and interesting interior objects during the 60s including the ‘dondola’ a fibreglass rocking chair (below) on permanent exhibit at MOMA New York.

Inspiration: The use of fibreglass as a furniture material was economically possible in Italy during the 1960s. It was appreciated by Leonardi and Stagi for being corrosive-proof, of high strength and excellent in appearance. Production ceased following the 1973 oil crisis.

Fabrication: A singular ‘ribbon’ of fibreglass with a white high  gloss paint finish, cantilevered on a triangular, chromed tubular steel base.

Hidden Features: The cantilever provides a subtle springiness.

Design Consigned Stylist: Poolside ‘Palm Springs’ perfection or inside as sculptural seating. Look best side by side. Architectural and eye catching pieces of design significance that will have your guests talking enviously.

Design Consigned Collector: Originals, made in Italy.
