CL9 ribbon chairs

CL9 ribbon chairs x 2

Matching pair of CL9 ribbon chairs by Cesare Leonardi and Franca Stagi.

Designed / launched by whom/when: Italian architects Cesare Leonardi and Franca Stagi released the CL9 ribbon chair in 1961. Designed at their studio in Modena, a supplier of unique and interesting interior objects during the 60s including the ‘dondola’ a fibreglass rocking chair (below) on permanent exhibit at MOMA New York.

Inspiration: The use of fibreglass as a furniture material was economically viable in Italy during the 1960s. It was appreciated by Leonardi and Stagi for being corrosive-proof, of high strength and excellent in appearance. Production ceased following the 1973 oil crisis.

Fabrication: A singular ‘ribbon’ of fibreglass with a white high  gloss paint finish, cantilevered on a triangular, chromed tubular steel base.

Hidden Features: The cantilever provides a subtle springiness.

Design Consigned Stylist: Poolside ‘Palm Springs’ perfection or inside as sculptural seating. Look best side by side. Fabulous chairs of design significance.

Design Consigned Collector: Originals, made in Italy.
